Midnight Launch for Two-Year Greek Odyssey


Playbox Theatre plan the biggest and most comprehensive exploration of The Greeks from 2019 to 2021.

Over 2000 young people celebrate Greek drama, story, myth, legend, art and food in a unique extended event.

At midnight on Midsummer Eve (21st June), a performance inspired by myths and legends of ancient Greece, Mythos, will launch a two-year programme of work with young people as participants, exploring the legacy we inherit from The Greeks in drama, story, myth and legend.

The midnight event will feature the performance Mythos, food, drink and activities set outdoors in the newly landscaped surround of The Dream Factory, Warwick.

Over the period 2019-21 Playbox Theatre will stage major productions and original new commissioned writing, as well as inviting guest companies to share our stages.

Medea – Euripides

Electra – Sophocles

The Birds – Aristophanes

Jason and the Argonauts – Young Production Company

Oresteia Trilogy - Aeschylus

La Calisto – Francesco Cavalli – Guest opera production

Antigone – Sophocles

These are the key dramas and opera to be reworked. Details of adaptations, guest artists and directors will be announced shortly.

For younger children there will be an original new work by Máirín O’Hagan.

Further productions and projects will be announced.

The Democratic Space

Playbox Theatre main performance spaces are conceived and created by Claude Andre-Roy and the scenographers Sceno-Plus (Quebec) to reflect the needs, techniques, vocal resources and potential through design for young people and their audiences.

As part of the Greek Odyssey, Playbox Theatre will explore different styles of staging for the experience to be life enhancing and compelling.

The opening production will be MEDEA of Euripides in Autumn 2019.

Playbox Theatre is a professional creative organisation developing theatre for and with young people. Based at its own custom-designed complex in Warwick, it aims to develop the skills talent and confidence of young people in the performance arts through exciting and innovative methods.

Founded in 1986 Playbox serves young artists and audiences across the Warwickshire and West Midlands regions with training and performance studios supporting its main creative base. Playbox Theatre places at its heart young people as artists and audience.

The Dream Factory is a creative collaboration between Playbox Theatre, Glenn Howells Architects and Sceno-Plus (Montreal). It stands on land provided by Warwickshire County Council.

Playbox Theatre is a key client of Warwick District Council, providing artistic quality and experience for young people in the region.
