We are delighted to welcome back Barney McElholm and his colleague, Bethany West, to Playbox Theatre this spring to create a Studio production of Start Swimming by James Fritz.

Auditions take place at The Dream Factory on Sunday 2nd February from 12.00-14.00 and are open to Playbox members aged 15+ only. You must be a fully registered member of Playbox ACTING or CIRCUS workshops in order to attend.

No preparation for this audition is required.

Please note, you may still audition if you are awaiting the results of the ‘Skellig’ audition, and we will ensure that you are not cast in both, due to clashes with rehearsals.

START SWIMMING

‘It’s small versus big. It’s the pressures of the future. It’s everything being stacked against you and all options feeling equally terrible. A show about occupation, revolution and the future of our youth. One step away from disaster, there is only one instruction: start swimming.

‘You come to us young people for hope. How dare you. You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words.’

‘Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.’

James Fritz’s challenging play asks what power young people have to affect change and resist authority. Bethany West & Barney McElholm (Resident Assistant Directors at Shakespeare’s Globe 2019) will co-direct and co-produce this blistering script for Playbox’s Studio theatre.

Bethany and Barney are looking to create a company of senior Playbox actors and theatre makers full of energy and ingenuity who really want to create a new piece of theatre!
